Almost Like Being In Love - Giannelli Square
Working all day with Cathy Segal-Garcia, Michele Weir, and Ingrid James, visiting from Australia, an adventurous, intrepid and wonderfully varied assortment of 20 jazz vocalists recently put together an excellent concert with a fabulous trio - Karen Hammack on piano, Adam Cohen on bass, and Don Littleton on drums at the beautiful Giannelli Square theatre in Northridge, CA.
It was a intense day of learning and absorbing an incredible amount of knowledge and experience so generously shared by three vocalists and teachers. With such a large group we were able to cover a variety of issues, and many needed elements in the presentation of our music - from different rhythmic patterns, to counting off, to finding keys, to all the elements of the vocal structure and breathing, to just about you-name-it! Yet, even with such a large group, everything ran very smoothly and pretty much 'on time', thanks to Cathy! With superb vocal coaches of this calibre, I knew I was going to learn a lot, but I probably learned about 5 times what I expected. We started at 8:30 am and went, with a couple of breaks for food and other rejuvenatory repasts, on thru to the concert at Giannelli Square that evening. The concert hall was beautiful, the band was jammin, and starting with Lady K, who set the bar very high with her heartfelt performance, everyone followed suit and gave it their BEST, for a evening of fine jazz!! I was very impressed with how well everyone did, and looked, on stage. I'd have to say, for everyone, teachers and students combined, it was a very successful day! I'm soooo glad I was able to be a part of it! Highly recommended!
For all those in other time zones and places who couldn't be there, Cathy video taped the whole wonderful event. And now, through the blessings of a new computer and good software, I am learning how to do some video editing and am able to share my part - my heart - with you. Cathy also hosted a new show - the "Singer's Round Table", at the Jazz Bakery the next day with guests Ingrid James and Tierney Sutton, and Karen Hammack on piano. A mix of questions, discussion, vocal examples, etc., this was also video taped, and their jam at the end, on "Beautiful Love", was just posted on YouTube, and it's fabulous! if you couldn't be there for that, here's your chance to watch some superb jazz vocalists improvise!
