June was one of those months were so many things happened, it was sometimes hard to grasp. The world lost quite a number of celebrities, including legends Michael Jackson, Ed McMahon and Farrah Faucett. These three alone gave us music, acting and laughter that made our lives easier when the chips were down and showed us about being courageous in the toughest of times. These three will definitely be missed.
For me, June was a month were I had a lot to think about. With Father's Day (It was especially hard seeing this was the 10th year without my dad) and my mom's birthday both in June, I went thru way too many emotions to grasp.
I've always said that music keeps me going, and in June, this was no exception. Without it, I would have continue to struggle mentally and spiritually.
There was one song in particular, not a jazz one, but one that gave me the inspiration to get back to doing one of the things I love to do...writing.
The song is called "The Frost of Tomorrow". I discovered it while looking on Amazon.com for some songs from the 80's (my favorite decade for music...heck I was into heavy metal and new wave at the time). It's by a singer named Marc Almond. I remembered him from the duo Soft Cell and the only U.S. hit they had in Tainted Love.
As I heard this song "The Frost of Tomorrow", the beat had kind of tribal feel, but it wasn't tribal. The keyboards added a mystical feel to the song and Marc's soft voice just gave this song the haunting beauty that just drew me in.
The more I listened to it, the more my soul came alive and wanted to tell me of her thoughts and feelings that I knew needed to be put to paper.
From there, the jazz took over. Listening to Richard Elliot's new CD "Rock Steady", which is amazing, and getting to see the legendary Bucky Pizzarelli at Yoshi's last month gave me a sense of hope, knowing that each day is a new day with new challenges, new lives, new loves, tragedy, comedy, hurt, pain, joy and happiness. And, as the saying goes, with every dark cloud, there is a silver lining.
As we in the US celebrate the 4th of July and those in Canada who celebrated Canada Day this past Wednesday, I do hope that you celebrate the holiday with those you love, and to celebrate it safely.
Now that July is here, and I'll be seeing Vital Information, Kurt Elling, and Kenny G this month, I thnk back to that one song that inspired me to not only write this blog, but to get back and do the two things I love to do....writing and listening to music.
The musical inspiration that gave my soul a reason to come alive and got me through one of the toughest months not only for me, but for the world as well.
Till next time.
