Here is a case of a somewhat unheralded artist, Ron Hutchens, with more than a bit of talent. Quite a bit more than a bit, in fact. This project, Something In Blue, is a clear statement of what we sometimes miss when looking away from those who are not necessarily household names in the business. This artist, primarily a pianist/keyboardist who plays all of the instruments on this self-produced recording, may well be one of the better kept secrets in the world of smooth jazz, especially where incorporating a bit of electronica is concerned. One listen to the level of skill, the appealing phrasing, and the full grasp and insight of what works in this particulare arena of smooth jazz, and you are confronted with the realization that Hutchens just may know more than a little something about this genre.. While I’ve heard some pretty repetitive, mundane, and unimaginative material from artists not yet ready for prime time, I truly think that one can find so much more in terms of depth in the fabric of Hutchens’ material. With this show of genuine melody, there is evidence that diversity, originality, and real thought went into the making of this album.
Hutchens invigorated my faith in the work ethic and imagination of the truly serious indie artist. Just listen. The proof is there.
